This is a Nicene-Council era book written by Hilary of Poitiers. He was forced out of his position as Bishop of Poitiers by the Arian apostasy in the institutional church. His book is significant for several reasons:
First, he thought what happened to him was eschatological (last-days related) and thus this book yeilds help for those who believe likewise that there is an apostasy in the church and that these are the last days.
Secondly, the book was famously quoted by John Calvin in his Institutes of the Christian Religion in his Dedication Letter to King Francis of France as a way to defend the fledgling Protestant Movement against an entrenched but unfaithful institution.
